| As the nation grapples with the impacts of the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Lexington Park Lions Club is stepping up to support our community members - especially the many federal employees and contractors in Southern Maryland - who are directly affected by furloughs, missed paychecks, and financial uncertainty. Recognizing the toll this disruption is taking on local families, the Lions Club has compiled and is sharing a comprehensive list of financial assistance resources, support programs, and relief services that can offer much-needed help during this difficult time. |

“We know that Lexington Park and surrounding areas are home to thousands of federal employees, military families, and contractors who are all feeling the stress of this shutdown,” said a spokesperson for the Lions Club. “It’s in times like these that communities must come together to uplift each other. If even one person finds relief because of this information, then we've done our part.” Practical Support and Financial ReliefMany financial institutions and service providers are extending grace periods, payment deferrals, and emergency loans specifically for furloughed federal workers. Some highlights include:
Rental and Mortgage SupportThe National Rental Home Council and other large rental management companies are offering rent deferment options. Tenants are encouraged to check with their leasing offices or property managers to see what options are available to furloughed residents. In addition, mortgage providers like U.S. Bank are offering to waive late fees or defer payments for affected borrowers. Food and Basic Needs Assistance
Official Tools and Communication ResourcesThe U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has released sample letters to help furloughed workers communicate with creditors, landlords, and mortgage lenders about payment hardships. Furloughed federal employees may also be eligible for unemployment compensation, depending on state law. What You Can DoThe Lions Club encourages everyone to check in on neighbors, friends, and coworkers who may be affected. If you're a landlord, employer, or service provider, consider how you can offer flexibility or support during this time. “If you or someone you know is feeling the pressure of this shutdown—don’t wait. Reach out. Help is out there,” the club spokesperson said. “This is what community is all about.” Need Help? Start Here:Below is a shortened version of the many available resources.
