As we move through the second week of July, there are several opportunities to reflect on the small actions that help build a stronger community. Whether it's protecting our eyesight, caring for the environment, or lending a hand to a neighbor, every effort adds up.

This week's observances begin with World Rural Development Day on July 6, which recognizes the importance of healthy, thriving communities and the people who help them grow. On July 11, World Population Day encourages thoughtful conversations about creating sustainable, healthy places for future generations. Wrapping up the week, National Different Colored Eyes Day on July 12 celebrates the uniqueness of every individual while also serving as a reminder that regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining good vision.

July also includes two month-long observances that align closely with the Lions mission. National UV Safety Month reminds everyone to protect their eyes by wearing quality UV-blocking sunglasses whenever spending time outdoors. Plastic Free July encourages reducing single-use plastics to help keep our parks, waterways, roadsides, and neighborhoods cleaner for everyone.

The Lexington Park Lions Club is proud to support the mission of Lions Clubs International, one of the world's largest service organizations dedicated to improving communities through vision care, humanitarian service, youth programs, disaster relief, and other local service projects. Our global motto, "We Serve," continues to guide everything we do.

This week, consider making a positive impact by volunteering at a local community project, recycling more at home, or scheduling a routine eye exam for yourself or a loved one. If you're looking for a meaningful way to serve your community and meet others who share that commitment, the Lexington Park Lions Club welcomes new members. Together, we can continue making Southern Maryland an even better place to live, work, and serve.
