A Week for Service: Lexington Park Lions Highlight September Community Observances

The week of September 14–20 offers several good reminders that service can take many forms, from honoring veterans to helping clean up a neighborhood. The Lexington Park Lions Club is encouraging local residents to take a little time this week to recognize several national observances and find a practical way to help here at home.

Thursday, September 17, is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, a time to reflect on our nation’s founding document and the responsibilities that come with citizenship. The following day, Friday, September 18, is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, honoring American prisoners of war and those who remain missing and unaccounted for. For many Southern Maryland families with ties to the military, it is an observance that carries special meaning.

Saturday, September 19, is National CleanUp Day. It is a simple idea and one almost anyone can take part in. Picking up litter along a neighborhood street, helping clean a park, or spending an hour improving a shared community space can make a noticeable difference. A few neighbors with gloves and trash bags can get quite a bit done.

September also brings several month-long causes worth remembering. Hunger Action Month encourages food donations and volunteer work to help families facing food insecurity. Sports Eye Safety Month promotes protective eyewear and prevention of sports-related eye injuries, an issue that connects closely with the Lions’ longtime work in vision and eye health. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month also recognizes children and families affected by pediatric cancer and the organizations that support them.

The Lexington Park Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, one of the world’s largest service organizations, with members working locally and around the world in areas including vision, youth programs, hunger relief, humanitarian service and community needs. The Lions motto is simple: “We Serve.” This week, that might mean honoring a veteran, donating a few cans of food, helping a neighbor, or picking up litter around Lexington Park.
