| The Lexington Park Lions Club has announced the recipients of its 2026 scholarship awards, recognizing two local students whose accomplishments reflect both academic achievement and a strong commitment to serving others in their communities.
This year’s Jess B. Davis Jr. Scholarship, awarded with an emphasis on community service, has been presented to Leah Lizama. Throughout her high school years, Leah built a reputation for dependable volunteer work alongside an impressive academic record. Club members noted that her service efforts consistently reflected quiet leadership and a genuine willingness to help where needed rather than simply fulfilling obligations.
The Sal and Myra Raspa Scholarship has been awarded to Leona Ngo, whose record combines academic success with active involvement in volunteerism, advocacy, and student leadership. Her work in the community stood out for its thoughtful approach and her interest in addressing larger community concerns while encouraging others to become involved as well.
The Club’s scholarship program was administered through BECA (St. Mary’s County Business, Education, and Community Alliance, Inc.), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps local students pursue higher education opportunities. Each year, BECA coordinates the St. Mary’s County Common Scholarship Application, which connects students with more than $200,000 in local scholarship opportunities.
In addition to administering the scholarship application process, BECA raises funding for its own scholarship programs and has awarded more than 300 scholarships to St. Mary’s County high school graduates since 1995. The Lexington Park Lions Club extends its appreciation to the BECA team for their support and assistance throughout this year’s scholarship project.
BECA is also seeking volunteers interested in helping with the annual scholarship program and other initiatives throughout the year. Their work continues to play an important role in supporting educational opportunities for students across St. Mary’s County.
Each year, the Lexington Park Lions Club supports students who reflect the organization’s long-standing values of service, leadership, and community responsibility. Scholarship committee members said both recipients demonstrated maturity, initiative, and a sincere understanding of what it means to give back to others.
As part of Lions Clubs International, one of the world’s largest service organizations, the Lexington Park Lions Club continues its mission of supporting local communities through service projects, youth programs, vision initiatives, and humanitarian efforts under the motto “We Serve.”
The Club congratulates Leah and Leona on their achievements and wishes them continued success in the years ahead.
