| Lexington Park Lions Club Community Update: A Week of Service, Safety, and Remembrance

The Lexington Park Lions Club is encouraging Southern Maryland residents to take a little time this week to look out for their neighbors, lend a hand in the community, and remember the families of those who gave their lives in military service. Several national observances this week offer simple ways to help, whether that means checking on an older neighbor, donating food, or spending a few hours outdoors cleaning up a local park or shoreline.
Falls Prevention Awareness Week, September 21–25, reminds us that something as simple as a loose rug, poor lighting, or an uneven walkway can create a serious hazard for an older adult. Tuesday, September 22, is Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Checking around the house for potential hazards, encouraging regular vision exams, and making sure older neighbors have the help they need are practical ways to support their safety and independence. These efforts fit naturally with the Lions' longstanding commitment to vision and eye health.
Saturday, September 26, is National Public Lands Day, a nationwide volunteer effort dedicated to caring for parks and other public lands. Here in St. Mary's County, our parks, waterways, and shorelines are an important part of everyday life. Picking up litter, helping maintain a walking trail, or joining a local cleanup are simple ways to keep these places enjoyable for everyone. September is also Hunger Action Month, and local food pantries continue to benefit from donations of nonperishable food and volunteer assistance. Sports Eye Safety Month is another reminder to make sure children and adults have proper protective eyewear when participating in activities where eye injuries can occur.
On Sunday, September 27, our community also observes Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day. With the strong military presence in Southern Maryland, this day holds special meaning for many local families. It is a time to remember the service members who lost their lives in service to our country and to recognize the parents, spouses, children, and other loved ones who carry that loss. A thoughtful word, a phone call, or simply taking time to remember can mean a great deal.
The Lexington Park Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, one of the world's largest service organizations, dedicated to improving communities locally and around the globe. From vision care and youth programs to hunger relief and other humanitarian efforts, Lions believe that service begins with recognizing a need and doing what we can to help. Our motto, “We Serve,” is a reminder that even small acts of kindness and volunteer work have a place in building a stronger community.

This week's challenge: Donate a few items to a local food pantry, check on an older neighbor, help clean up a park or shoreline, or reach out to a Gold Star family. Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is simply show up and lend a hand.
