| The Lexington Park Lions Club is recognizing several observances this week that tie closely to community service here in Southern Maryland. From appreciating our home state and protecting outdoor spaces to caring for children’s eyesight, there are plenty of simple ways for local residents to lend a hand.
Monday, August 24, is National Maryland Day, a chance to appreciate the people, history and communities that make Maryland home. Tuesday, August 25, marks National Park Service Founders Day. It falls during National Park Week, August 22–30, which is being held in August this year as the National Park Service celebrates its 110th birthday. The week encourages Americans to visit parks, learn about history and help care for public lands.
The week finishes with National Beach Day on August 30, another good reminder for those of us living near the Chesapeake Bay and its many creeks and waterways. Picking up litter, keeping plastic and other trash out of storm drains, or simply leaving a shoreline cleaner than you found it are small jobs that matter. National Beach Day is observed each year on August 30 and includes an emphasis on keeping beaches and waterways clean.
August is also Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month. With students heading back to school, families are reminded that good vision plays an important role in reading, classroom work and everyday learning. Vision and eye health have long been important service areas for Lions, and the Lexington Park Lions Club continues that tradition as part of Lions Clubs International, one of the world’s largest service organizations dedicated to helping communities locally and around the world.
There does not have to be a large event behind every act of service. Volunteer a little time, donate to a local cause, pick up litter along your street or help a neighbor who could use an extra set of hands. The Lions motto is simple: “We Serve.”
